We discuss what it means to not enjoy The Dark Knight Rises. What do you think, do you need an airtight reason to dislike a movie?
On the one hand, yeah it’s unfair to attack a fictional movie you’re set on disliking by pointing out its factual shortcomings. On the other hand there is such a thing as creating a consistent universe, and when you bring in elements that contradict everything you thought you knew about the world you were watching it’s not the viewers fault for not suspending disbelief; that’s the writer’s job.
That said the holes in Dark Knight Rises weren’t what left me completely unsatisfied, it was just how bored I felt during the whole ordeal. My lack of interest in the characters, story, tone, and action are why I walked out feeling like I’d been robbed of 3 hours, and when you’re trapped in a theater for that long with a movie that consistently fails to give anything back to you, finding the holes is the only thing left to keep you entertained.

I could understand if it was a Sin City thing where it’s just this dark alternate universe but clearly Gotham City is in the United States. There are scenes involving Japan in The Dark Knight and the President is referenced in the new movie. How could the most highly populated city in the United States (by a whopping 4 million) constantly be under attack/taken over by these masked maniacs? And then be completely ignored by the rest of the country? WHY IN GOD’S NAME WOULD YOU LIVE THERE!?!?!?
Despite its flaws this still stands as my favorite Batman movie.

Man I was really hoping I would like the Dark Knight Rises despite how impossibly hyped up it was but I was really reaching for things to like about that movie. Michael Caine was great and I have to give Anne Hathaway credit but I was constantly questioning the logic of the movie. I don’t want to spoil anything but there were major plot points of that film that were built on holes. And I really thought the darkness that Nolan’s benched his career on was too understated throughout the movie, all of his big budget films have made up for their inconsistencies by (usually) really nailing down a certain tone, but I never felt it with this one. I really wasn’t trying to hate it but there wasn’t anything there for me to love.

Thank god no one I know was hurt last night. Some of my friends know people who were in the theater but Jesus just thank god. This just shouldn’t happen.
