I haven’t been as interested in Deerhoof’s newish, almost classic-rock style as their older, freer sounds (especially circa The Runners Four, but this is just a completely perfect pop song. Satomi Matsuzaki’s gorgeous vocal melody is more sustained and lyrical than usual, but she still gets some of her signature rounded-vowel bounce in the chorus, when she sings “top of the world”. John Dieterich’s accompanying guitar playing is a total fist-pumping thrill.
Something about the Satomi vocals in this song have a particularly Stereolab and almost Shaggs sounding quality to them, in a great way of course.
